Source for this piece of info on Mr X. (1957), is Mr. Diptkirti Chaudhuri, who finished joint second alongside me, in the Penguin Spring Fever Quiz.
He, in his blog 'Calcutta Chromosome' mentions this lovely Trivia :
'Mr X' (1957) starring Ashok Kumar, was inspired by 'The Invisible Man' and had all those tricks - invisible man smoking a cigarette, furniture moving on its own and pistol hanging in air and scaring the villains.
What made 'Mr X' remarkable is a little trick Nanabhai Bhatt and the producer G.P. Sippy played on Ashok Kumar, the 'hero' of this film. Kumar was signed on a daily fee of Rs 1000.
Under some pretext, a smart Bhatt shot the first shots and the climax with him on the same day.
And as Mr X was masked throughout the film, a duplicate did the rest of the film !
The duplicate was Mehmood who, later, rose to become one of the most successful comedian in the industry !
Ashok Kumar was sore. The amount he had got for doing this entire film was even less than his earnings from Bombay Talkies for his first film ! But he was helpless. Moreover, 'Mr X' was a hit ! From this day onwards he and most of the stars refuse to shoot the climax till they are paid all their dues.
When Bhatt was quizzed, he quipped, “Everything is fair in business.” No wonder the sons he has left behind - Mahesh, Mukesh, Parveen and Robin - are as shrewd.
I did some more research and found some more info, which is as follows :
IMDB mentions Mr. T.C. Dewan as the Producer of Mr. X (1957) and so I'm not sure of Mr. G.P. Sippy's involvement in this film.
Trivia : Mohammed Rafi sang a derivation of rock-and-roll, "Lal Lal Lal" with gusto in 'Mr. X'.
The music was composed by N. Dutta and Chitragupta (father of composers Anand-Milind)
I'm not 100% sure but i think the same film was re-released as "Aadhi Raat Ke Baad"
in 1965. (Ashok Kumar plays 'The Invisible Man' in it and the rest of the cast is also the same in both films.)
