Question Courtesy : Avinash Upadhyay Sir
After three hit films in a row; 'Guide' (1965), 'Teesri Manzil' (1966), and 'Jewel Thief', Vijay Anand experienced his first flop; "Kahin Aur Chal" (1968).
Initially, "Kahin Aur Chal" (1968), had the makings of a hit, as it starred heart-throb Dev Anand and Asha Parekh, who were both top box office draws in 1968, along with music composers Shanker-Jaikishen.
In the biography of Mr. Vijay Anand, titled "Ek Hota Goldie," the writer Anita Padhye tells us about a very specific reason why this 1968 film starring Dev Anand and Asha Parekh flopped. There is no way a Goldie Anand movie with Dev Anand and Asha Parekh, and with Shankar-Jaikishen as Music Director's would otherwise go unnoticed.
What is the so called "specific reason" due to which the film flopped ?
Additional Trivia :
** The biography "Ek Tha Goldie" is based on tape-recorded interviews of Mr. Vijay Anand that the writer conducted through the 90's till Vijay Anand's demise in 2004.
** Cameraman Jal Mistry was a good friend of both Dev Anand & Goldie. When he decided to Produce a film, he entrusted the responsibility of Directing it to Vijay Anand.
Since Jal Mistry was associated with Navketan for a long time, both Dev and Vijay Anand decided to help him. Dev Anand and Asha Parekh were cast for the leading roles in the film titled 'Kahin Aur Chal.'
The patriarchal figure of Filmistan Studios, Tolaram Jalan was financing the film. Tolaram Jalan signed a contract with Jal Mistry that all the rights of the film would be with Jalan himself.
The film had Music by Shankar Jaikishan. Jal Mistry had suggested their name. They were the top of the line Music Directors at that time.
Four songs were recorded for "Kahin aur Chal". Three of those were picturised in Khandala. "Aye Jaanewale Aa, Der Na Lage" was a beautiful melody. The hero works as an engine driver and the heroine looks forward to the time when his train would reach the station for two minutes everyday.
Despite all the ingredients of a sure shot hit, the movie flopped badly and hardly anybody has heard of it.

ReplyDeleteHoqw about removing the "sir' bit, Akhil?
ReplyDelete@ Avinash Sir : Anything, but this.. Sir :)
ReplyDeleteThe film flopped because the film's financier Mr. Tolaram Jalan wanted to Produce a 'Flop Film' in order to adjust his income taxes !!
ReplyDeleteHe released the film in a single matinee show and then pulled it out from the theatre.
Was this the storyline behind the 1995-97 Sony TV serial " yeh Shaadi Nahin ho sakti"? In the serial, Golcha seth ( Sudhir Pandey)wants to make a flop movie to adjust his taxes. The movie becomes a hit but the serial was a big flop!!
