On 13th March, 1940, Michael O’ Dwyer, former Governor of Punjab was shot dead by Udham Singh at a meeting in the Caxton Hall, Westminster.

Udham Singh was represented at Old Bailey (London’s Central Criminal Court), without a payment, by a bushy-haired Barrister who was identified as "an important worker in the Indian revolutionary movement", by the British Secret Service (MI-5).

A few years later, back in India,  this intense and 'dangerously persuasive' Barrister was described by many as the second most powerful man in India after Jawaharlal Nehru.

** In 1961, he created/established the first Sainik school. Today, there are around 26 Sainik schools which cover almost all states of the country and help the students prepare for an entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, Pune and and the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, Kerela.


** It was he, who is said to have liberated Goa from Portuguese rule.


** He, along with Alan Lane, founded the Penguin and Pelican books.
