  3. well done anup, you are absolutely spot on..
    and so is paddy :)

The connect is Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khilari (1977)

Pic 1 : The Nawab of Lucknow (Avadh, Oudh),
    (b. 30 July 1822 - d. 1 September 1887) was the fifth King of Oudh from 13 February 1847 to
    7 February 1856.

Wajid Ali Shah left his beloved home to escape the British and lived in exile in Calcutta until his death.
He was a poet, playwright, dancer and a great patron of the arts. He is widely credited with the revival of Kathak as a major form of classical Indian dance.
This portrait picture hangs in his tomb.

Amjad Khan played the role of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah in the film.

    Pic 2 : Munshi Premchand a.k.a. Dhanpat Rai (July 31, 1880– October 8, 1936)

Shatranj ke khiladi ("The Chess Players") is a Hindi short-story written by Munshi Premchand. Premchand's Urdu version is titled Shatranj ki Baazi.
Satyajit Ray's 1977 film was based on this story.

Pic 3 : Fearing blood shedding of his people in a hopelessly unequal battle, the king, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, opted to hand over the kingdom to the British with out a fight, singing to himself a Thumari that he had composed -
    "Jab Chhod Chale Lucknow Nagari
Kaho Haal Aadam Par Kya Guzari"

(As we leave our beloved city of Lucknow,
see what we have to go through..)

Amjad Khan recorded the Thumri "Tadap Tadap Sagri Rain Gujari" in his own voice, for Satyajit Ray, who himself composed the music for this film.

Pic 4 : Sir Richard Attenborough (born 29 August 1923)
(Academy Award Winner for Best Director, Best Picture for Gandhi, 1982)

A dear friend of Satyajit Ray, Attenborough played the role of General Outram in the film.

Pic 5 : Brijmohan Nath Mishra popularly known as Pandit Birju Maharaj (born February 4, 1938) is currently the leading exponent of the Lucknow Kalka-Bindadin gharana of Kathak dance in India.
He also has an excellent command over Hindustani classical music and is an accomplished vocalist as well.

He choreographed the dance sequences in Shatranj Ke Khilari.

He sang the thumri "Kanha Main Tose Haari chhodo Saari", in Shatranj Ke Khilari.

(Trivia : The song "Kaahe Chhede Mohe" from the 2002 film version of Devdas, was choreographed by Pt. Birju Maharaj)

Pic 6 : Barry John; acclaimed theatre person and acting guru.

Shatranj Ke Khilari was his debut film as an actor.
Barry John runs the Theatre Acting Group (TAG), Imago Media Company and the Barry John Acting Studio. His famous protégé include the likes of Shahrukh Khan, Manoj Bajpai, Mira Nair, Siddharth Basu, Raghuvir Yadav, Shiney Ahuja, Lillette Dubey, Divya Seth, Pamela Rooks and Sita Raina.
He also taught at the NSD and his students included Anupam Kher and Annu Kapoor.

Pic 7 : Amitabh Bachchan (middle row, 7th from left)
(A very rare pic of Amitabh Bachchan, along with fellow students in Sherwood College, Nainital, 1958)

Amitabh Bachchan was the narrator of Shatranj Ke Khilari.
