Trivial Pursuit 61

Mr. Kafeel Aazar

Mr. Jagjit Singh

According to Mr. Jagjit Singh, he got his break with HMV for his first record, when he happened to come across a magical 'Nazm' (poem).

The 'Nazm' was published in the magazine 'Shama' (owned by Sadia Dehlvi’s family), and had been sent in by a reader. Jagjit Singh loved the 'Nazm' and immediately noted it down.

The poem was written in an arrhythmic style, and Jagjit Singh had to set it to a stop-start rhythm.

It is surprising that the poem which has always been associated with Jagjit Singh, was first recorded in someone else's voice !! As a Music Director, Jagjit Singh first used this 'Nazm' for an album and recorded it in Bhupinder's voice. Unfortunately, that album could not be released. This 'Nazm' was then used in a film, but the film could not be completed.

But Jagjit Singh loved the 'Nazm' and he could sense the kind of impact it would make on music lovers. As soon as Jagjit Singh got the contract of a music album from H.M.V., this was the first song that he recorded.

The poem remains one of Jagjit Singh's finest songs.

It's sad that the writer of this poem, Mr. Kafeel Aazar, who hailed from Amroha, U.P., did not get much recognition, whereas, the poem gave Mr. Jagjit Singh a lot of fame and adulation.

Identify the poem, rendered magnificently by Mr. Jagjit Singh.
